A Boston grand piano with lesson books ready to play

        . . . a wonderful lifetime journey

I have had the privilege of teaching more than 200 private piano and guitar students of all ages over a period of more than 25 years. I am also a New York State certified K-6 classroom teacher, having spent 30 years in the public school system before retiring in June of 2016.

Prior to my career as a public school educator, I taught piano and guitar lessons privately, with a schedule of 35 to 40 weekly students. Several of these students later went on to teach music themselves. Throughout my career in the public schools, I continued to teach private piano and guitar lessons, although on a more limited basis due to the demands of full-time classroom teaching.

My own training was classical, as a private student of Florence Sidel, who studied at the Juilliard School of Music with Dorothea Anderson La Follette. I pass along to my students the strong foundation and proper technique that only classical training can provide, while also teaching popular styles of playing, as well as composition, arranging, and recording for more advanced students who wish to go in those directions.

Helping a student discover the lifetime treasure of playing music is the most important part of teaching an instrument. I work well with total beginners, encouraging each student to feel happy about his or her own progress rather than to feel stressed about reaching a particular level in a certain amount of time. I want music to be one of the greatest joys in their lives, as it has always been in mine.
